It's more than just a piece of paper

Last week I had the honor of standing with 50 fellow UCSC employees to receive our Diversity and Inclusion Program certificates. Over 20% of certificate graduates this year were BAS team members, and I could not have been more proud to mark this important moment with them. Diversity is a key part of our UCSC Principles of Community. However, we must not look at the topics of diversity and inclusion as simply statements to include on a poster, rather we must ensure we find ways to live these principles in our daily work.

This certificate is more than just a piece of paper

Years ago, I learned about the concept of Ubuntu.  This framework, or world view, highlights the connectedness of all humanity. We are all interconnected, and not simply a mass of individuals living within the same space. I believe the values of diversity and inclusion are critical to advancing the concept of Ubuntu. The more we find ways to learn and celebrate the rich and unique experience of every team mate, the more we can enhance empathy and the notion of oneness. We are all connected in serving the mission of UCSC, and I want to ensure the BAS division is a place where everyone feels like they are a welcomed and engaged member of the team.

I hope that the BAS team mates who completed the program with me, and those who completed the program in prior years, will help me find ways to strengthen our division and ensure it is a place where team members can live out Ubuntu.

A slug I am,
Sarah
